I had done most of this painting in the fall and winter of 2018 - 2019 -- but I was never happy with it. It seemed far too static in composition and the light was flat and the color dull. |
I had put it aside for a long time as just something I would have to think about. I realized a few weeks ago that I needed to change the composition, move away from the source photos and add some diagonals on the right. I was also never happy with the color, it always seemed too flat. Of course, the photo was taken on a day with very flat light, but I really liked the colors and light in the two other paintings from this time, and so I decided to change this one to be more like the others. No more blue rocks - and a bit more purple. |
Below is what it looked like a few weeks in to the process. After that I kept going back and forth with how bright and what hue the rocks should be. It's a very grey photo in black and white so the contrast had to be in terms of warm and cold colors.... It was also a struggle to get things to sit properly in space. It has gotten much more locked up than in this early version...
I may work some more on it... but basically I think I have gotten in the 'ball park' of where I want to be with this painting. And I got to the point where it was fun to work on it!
